Understanding Your Role

Social Host Ordinance (SHO) holds hosts responsible when two or more minors possess or consume alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs on their property. (Adults and teens over 18 can both be held responsible.) In Marin County, violations can result in a civil fine of $750–$2,500, or criminal charges if other offenses are involved.

The Ask

The Be The Influence Pledge encourages parents to make a pledge to keep their homes a safe and substance-free space for teens. The ask is simple. (1) Never provide substances to minors. (2) Do not allow substance use in your home, and (3) Actively supervise teen gatherings.

Talking to Your Teen

Talking about substance use isn’t easy. Your child may try to avoid the discussion, and you might feel unsure how to proceed. But avoiding it isn’t the answer. Kids who talk with their parents about substance use are up to 50% less likely to use substances. These conversations can also reduce the likelihood of needing professional help later. So start the conversation when the time feels right—and keep it going!

BTI Party Guide

Hosting a party should be fun, but safety is key. Allowing underage drinking or substance use can lead to fines, lawsuits, and criminal charges under Social Host Ordinances. Whether at your home or a rented venue, setting clear boundaries and maintaining a substance-free environment ensures a safe and enjoyable event for all.
